A resident’s quick action, public safety technology and a coordinated regional response helped Dublin Police stop an attempted vehicle theft and take six suspects into custody during the early morning hours of Oct. 2. The arrests may also have prevented additional thefts in Dublin and neighboring communities.
The incident began when a resident on Wyandotte Woods Boulevard saw two people trying to enter a vehicle parked in his driveway. He yelled, prompting them to flee, and immediately called Dublin Police.
That call set a rapid and coordinated response in motion.
When officers arrived, they found the vehicle running and determined a key fob had been created for it before the suspects fled. Based on a description provided by the resident, officers used Flock camera technology to identify a potential suspect vehicle. Dublin Police shared information with neighboring Hilliard Division of Police, extending the response beyond city limits.
A short time later, Hilliard officers located the vehicle at a gas station and detained six suspects without incident. The suspects were then turned over to Dublin Police for further investigation.
A search of the vehicle uncovered tools commonly associated with vehicle thefts, along with a phone displaying directions to Wyandotte Woods and other evidence. The six suspects, all from Dayton, were charged with attempted theft of a motor vehicle and possession of criminal tools.
“These arrests are a strong example of what can happen when an alert resident, skilled public safety professionals, technology and regional partnerships all work together,” Dublin Police Chief Justin Páez said. “Through this extraordinary partnership, we believe we not only interrupted the activity reported in Dublin, but likely prevented additional thefts here and in neighboring communities.”
The response involved Dublin patrol officers, detectives, supervisors, Northwest Regional Emergency Communications Center staff and the Hilliard Division of Police, all working together to quickly move the case from a resident’s call to the safe and successful arrest of six suspects.
This case shows community safety in action: neighbors looking out for neighbors, public safety professionals ready to respond and regional partners working together. A safer community truly starts with all of us.
